Nick Jonas & Demi Lovato cancel North Carolina shows over anti-LGBT HB2 law

By Will Stroude

Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato have become to latest celebs to take a stand against anti-LGBT laws in the US after cancelling two upcoming shows in North Carolina.

The former Disney duo, who had planned to play two shows in the state during their joint world tour this summer, revealed that they would be removing the dates from their schedule in protest at North Carolina’s recently introduced ‘HB2’ law, which eliminates anti-discrimination protections for transgender people and controversially forces them to use the bathroom of their ‘birth’ gender.

“After much thought and deliberation, we have decided to cancel our Honda Civic Tour: Future Now shows in Rayleigh and Charlotte,” Jonas and Lovato revealed in a joint post on social media last night (April 25). “One of our goals for the tour has always been to create an atmosphere where every single attendee feels equal, included, and accepted for who they are.

“North Carolina’s discriminatory HB2 law is extremely disappointing, and it takes away some of the LGBT community’s most basic rights and protections. But we will not allow this to stop us from continuing to make progress for equality and acceptance.”

They added: “We know the cancellation of these shows is disappointing to our fans, but we trust that you will stand united with us against this hateful law”.

Lovato – who was honoured with a GLAAD vanguard Award last month for her LGBT advocacy work – and Jonas join other musical heavyweights likes Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam and Ringo Starr in cancelling gigs in states with discriminatory laws.

Other acts such ad Mumford & Sons and Cyndi Lauper have shown their support by donating the proceeds of shows played in the offending states to LGBT organisations, and to those fighting the bills through legal means.
