By Josh Haggis
Nicole Scherzinger has been cast in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s forthcoming West End revival of Cats.
The former Pussycat Dolls singer will make her West End debut as Grizabella – a role originated by Elaine Page in 1981 – when Cats returns for a 12-week run in London from December to February.
The revival boasts some of the show’s original production team, including director Trevor Nunn, costume designer John Napier and choreographer Gillian Lynne.
However, Lloyd Webber has also revealed that rapping will be incorporated into the new production in a bid to bring Cats up to date. Find out more here.
“To have the opportunity to work with Andrew, Trevor and Gillian is a dream come true. I grew up listening to Andrew’s extraordinary music and was lucky enough, a couple of years ago, to record Cats’ beautiful song Memory,” said Scherzinger in a press release.
“Andrew’s score is breathtaking and I am truly honoured to have been asked to take part in what I know will be a very special time in my career. I can’t wait to begin rehearsals,” she added.
Cats debuted in the West End in 1981, and went on to have a record-breaking 21-year run before coming to an end in 2002. The original production won an Olivier Award for Best Musical, while the Broadway adaptation went on to win seven Tony Awards.
Meanwhile, Scherzinger has recently debuted an emotional power ballad called Run from her upcoming second solo album – listen to it here.
