Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are to star in a new Netflix comedy series from the co-creator of Friends.
The duo, who famously appeared together in the classic 1980 comedy film Nine to Five, have signed up for Netflix’ original series Grace and Frankie. The show has been co-created by Marta Kauffmann (Friends) and Howard J Morris (Home Improvement).
Fonda and Tomlin will play two women whose husbands suddenly announce they are in love with each other and are planning to get married. The pair, formerly arch rivals, now find that their lives are permanently intertwined.
Speaking about Grace and Frankie, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said: “Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are among the funniest and most formidable actresses ever, and it’s an incredible privilege to give them the opportunity to run riot on Netflix. The show created for them by Marta and Howard is warm, very funny and anything but wholesome. We can’t wait.”
Grace and Frankie is one of several original series that Netflix has commissioned over the last couple of years, with House of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, Hemlock Grove and a revival of cult sitcom Arrested Development all proving popular with viewers and TV critics.
Grace and Frankie will debut in 2015 on Netflix.
