Ofcom receive two complaints over Channel 4’s ‘Cucumber’

By Will Stroude

Ofcom received just two complaints over Cucumber’s first episode, it has been revealed.

The first episode of Russell T Davies’ hotly-anticipated gay drama series aired on Channel 4 on Thursday night (January 22), and reassuringly the show’s explicit content appears not to have upset viewers.

The regulator confirmed that it received two complaints “objecting to sexual content and harmful messages about sex and relationships”.

In a statement they said: “Ofcom has received two complaints in relation to Cucumber on Channel 4 on January 22nd. We will assess these complaints before deciding whether to investigate. Our rules do not discriminate between scenes with same-sex and opposite sex couples.”

Last year, Channel 4’s Head of Drama, Piers Wenger, warned that some viewers may find content featured in the series “challenging”.

“In a drama looking at the details of people’s sex lives, whether gay or straight people, of course you are required to bust taboos or ask probing questions,” he said. “There’s no doubt people will find it challenging but it’s asking intelligent questions in an original way.” – click here to read more.
