‘OITNB’ writer files for divorce after coming out as gay

writer Lauren Morelli has filed for divorce from her husband after recently coming out as gay.

The writer – who has penned four episodes of the prison comedy-drama – is now in a relationship with actress Samira Wiley, who plays Poussey on the series.

Morelli’s split from her husband of two years, Steve Basilone, is amicable, according to TMZ.

In the show, Taylor Schilling’s character, Piper, is engaged to a man, Larry, played by Jason Biggs, but finds herself incarcerated in the same prison as her ex-girlfriend, Laura Prepon’s Alex.

The show’s scenario had obvious parallels for Morelli, who had married Basilone just months before she landed a job on Orange Is the New Black, but found herself coming to terms with her feelings for women while she worked in the writers’ room and on set.

Orange Is the New Black‘s second season debuted on Netflix in June, with a third season set to premiere in 2015.
