Oscars 2019: Lady Gaga up for Best Actress as ‘The Favourite’ and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ score nominations for Best Picture

The nominations for the 2019 Academy Awards have been announced – and it’s looking like one of the gayest Oscar races in years.

Lady Gaga is officially a three-time Oscar nominee after scoring a Best Supporting Actress nod for A Star Is Born, as well as Best Original song for ‘Shallow’.

The ‘Bad Romance’ singer previously landed a Best Original Song nod in 2016 for her song ‘Til It Happens to You’, from sexual assault documentary The Hunting Ground.

LGBT stories have also been rewarded heavily in this year’s Oscars nominations, with period drama The Favourite, Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody and Don Shirley biopic Green Book all up for Best Picture.

The Favourite’s Olivia Colman will go up against Lady Gaga in the Best Actress category, as will Melissa McCarthy, for her portrayal of lesbian celebrity biographer Lee Israel in Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Meanwhile, The Favourite’s Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone, Green Book’s Mahershala Ali and Can You Ever Forgive Me?’s Richard E. Grant are up for Best Supporting Actress and Actor awards following their portrayal of LGBT roles.

Despite the abundance of queer cinematic stories being celebrated at the Oscars 2019, a telling statistic is that while six of the 20 actor and actress awards are for LGBT roles, just one nominee (Lady Gaga) actually identifies as LGBT. Still plenty of work to do then…
