The episode also includes a moment where Penny is drawing a portrait of her family when she explains: “I’m Penny Polar Bear. I live with my mummy and my other mummy.”

“One mummy is a doctor and one mummy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti,” the character adds.

The desire for LGBTQ+ characters to feature on the show has been brewing for a number of years now; in 2019, a petition was created to encourage the inclusion of a same-sex couple that garnered over 23,000 signatures.

One supporter of the new addition to the show shared: “Well what do you know? My kids saw the first same-sex couple on Peppa Pig and the world didn’t end.”

Penny Polar Bear said she lives with her ‘mummy and her other mummy’ and the four horsemen of the apocalypse didn’t came storming over the horizon to bring humanity to a close,” they continued.

Peppa Pig has been hailed as a queer icon with the release of the Peppa Pig album, which included several nods to the LGBTQ+ community. Most prominently, the track ‘Rainbow’.

Peppa Pig Radio and the character’s Spotify playlists also feature a number of queer artists including Charli XCX, Carly Rae Jepsen, Rina Sawayama, Hayley Kiyoko and more.

The Attitude September/October issue is out now.
