Pierce Brosnan says producer ‘wouldn’t allow’ James Bond to be gay
By Will Stroude
Pierce Brosnan has said that while a gay James Bond would make for “interesting viewing”, the producer of the iconic spy series would never allow it to happen.
Brosnan, who starred as the iconic spy in four films between 1995 and 2002, told Details that while he could imagine Bond as a gay man, veteran producer Barbara Brocolli – who has been involved in the production of every Bond film since 1983’s Octopussy – wouldn’t let it happen during her lifetime.
Asked whether he could picture a gay James Bond, the Brosnan replied: “Sure. Why not?”, before adding: “Actually, I don’t know how it would work. I don’t think Barbara would allow a gay Bond to happen in her lifetime.
“But it would certainly make for interesting viewing,” he continued.
“Let’s start with a great black actor being James Bond. Idris Elba certainly has the physicality, the charisma, the presence. But I think Daniel [Craig] will be there for a while yet.”
The 62-year-old’s comments come after 2012’s Oscar-winning Bond installment Skyfall set tongues wagging after Daniel Craig’s 007 implied he had experimented with his sexuality during a sexually charged encounter with Javier Bardem’s villainous Raoul Silva – though Craig insisted afterwards that he couldn’t imagine the character ever being gay.
In the same interview Brosnan, who was born in County Louth, Ireland, went on to speak of his pride at his home country’s recent legalisation of same-sex marriage.
“I never thought in a million years [it would happen], but hallelujah!” he said.
“Enough of the shaming. It’s a great indication of the forward-thinking of a nation that’s been so mangled by religion.”
Meanwhile, the eagerly-anticipated Spectre, starring Daniel Craig, Ben Whishaw and former Attitude cover star Andrew Scott, is set for worldwide release on November 6.
While details around who’ll be singing the theme tune for the 24th installment in the British spy franchise are still being under wraps for now, we recently took a look at the artists who could be in contention for the coveted slot – click here to read more.
