Priyanka Chopra has praised her new film The Matrix Resurrections for its feeling of “inclusivity.”
Responding to the upcoming movie’s reference to the Matrix as a trans metaphor, the star added in an interview with Attitude that she was “excited” for trans and non-binary people to see it.
The first three Matrix movies were directed by Lilly and Lana Wachowski, both of whom have since come out as trans.
Lily went on to confirm in 2020 that the films are about the trans experience, saying: “That was the original intention, but the world wasn’t quite ready.” (The Matrix Resurrections is directed by Lana only).
“It’s wonderful when we actually honour people for who they are”
“That makes me so happy,” Priyanka said, when asked how it feels to know trans and non-binary viewers are excited to see the film. “It makes me so happy that there’s a feeling of inclusion, as someone who also craves inclusion in many different ways.
“It’s just wonderful when we see people for being people, and we actually honour people for who they are,” she added. “I’m so excited and I really hope when this movie is seen by everyone, they feel a sense of pride.”
Keanu Reeves also responded to the film’s trans metaphor in a previous interview with Attitude, saying: “For me, anything that’s positive and good and supportive, and helps with understanding, and community and bringing people together is awesome.”
The film also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Candyman) and Jessica Henwick (Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens).
The Matrix Resurrections is in cinemas from 22 December.
