Rihanna and Nicki Minaj turned down this massive summer hit
By Will Stroude
It’s been one of the biggest break out hits of 2015, so it seems both Rihanna and Nicki Minaj missed a trick when then turned down Major Lazer’s massive summer jam Lean On.
Major Lazer’s creator, Diplo, revealed that the track was sent to both stars but was rejected by each of them before the song’s co-writer, Danish singer-songwriter MØ, eventually decided to provide vocals for the track herself.
Revealing that the track was originally written as a slow reggae song, Diplo told Time that the double rejection by Rhi-Rhi and Nicki was in fact “a blessing in disguise”.
“[MØ] sounds better than anybody was going to sound on that record,” he said.
“All we want to do is make the records feel like classics, even though they’re feeling progressive and strange to a normal ear.”
Lean On currently sits at number 11 on the Official UK Singles Chart an incredible six months after its initial release, having peaked at number two earlier in the year. Given Rihanna and Nicki’s recent chart form, they might be kicking themselves over this one…
