Sam Smith is ensuring 2018’s biggest mainstream dance hits has some serious gay energy with the fierce new video for his Calvin Harris collaboration ‘Promises’.
The 26-year-old star, whose relationship with 13 Reasons Why star Brandon Flynn came to an end after nine months earlier this summer, proves that single life suits him just fine as he parties in a video full of voguing, glitter, and lewk after lewk.
Featuring appearances from model Winnie Harlow as well as Harris himself, the ‘Promises’ video celebrates drag culture as it channels the vibe of Paris is Burning; the 1990 documentary chronicling New York City’s drag ball scene and the lives of the men and women in it.
Sharing the video on Twitter on Tuesday (4 September), Smith joked that the shoot “Felt like a normal horse meat disco Sunday night in Vauxhall”, referring to London’s popular gay disco night.
So excited to show you the official video for Promises. Never had so much fun shooting a video. Felt like a normal horse meat disco Sunday night in Vauxhall haha!@CalvinHarris https://t.co/1eFpgAQH7g

‘Promises’ is already riding high in the charts, entering the Official UK Singles chart at #2 last Friday (31 August) just a week after release.
Given it looks like the song will be hanging round the upper echelons of the chart for some time to come, here’s hoping the ‘Promises’ video can help bring an uplifting slice of LGBT culture to an even wider audience too.
