Sam Smith is now maybe singing the James Bond theme

By Shaun Kitchener

UPDATE:Just a few days after insisting he’s “definitely not” signing the theme to the new Bond film, Spectre, Sam Smith just dropped a pretty massive hint to the contrary on Twitter. The Grammy winner took to Twitter today to post a picture showing a close-up of a ring – and not just any ring:

The ring sports the symbol associated with ‘Spectre’, a fictional terrorist organisation in the ‘Bond’ universe. Seems like an unequivocal confirmation that he’s singing the theme tune, were it not for Sam’s categorical denial mere days ago. Let’s look back at how we reported that…

Sam Smith’s debut LP, 2014’s In The Lonely Hour, has been a huge commercial and critical hit, and the serial award winner is now working on its follow-up – which apparently will be just as sad.

Speaking to Jo Wiley on BBC Radio 2, he said: “I’ve already managed to write some pretty sad things… With In The Lonely Hour I was put in the studio every day, and I had to really soul search for a story, but now something is happening to me and I’m writing about it literally as soon as I possibly can.

“And it’s a really raw and honest way of writing, but I’m enjoying it. So I’m already writing. When it’s released is up to the amazing team I have around me, but I’m already writing.”

And as for Spectre, the singer – who hit back at homophobic social media slurs last month – insisted: “That’s not me. That’s definitely not me… I’ve still got loads to do, I’ve got an Australia tour, but I kind of finish in December which is great, it gives me a chance to be in London, be in my home and go out with my friends.”

Bookies suspended betting on the next 007 hitmaker in July after a huge £15,000 bet was placed on Radiohead. Ellie Goulding had previously been the frontrunner with most punters.

The most recent Bond films have had theme song contributions from Adele, Jack White and Alicia Keys, Chris Cornell, Madonna and Garbage. Adele’s Skyfall was officially announced on October 1, 2012, just a few weeks ahead of the film – so we may be kept waiting for the Spectre singer’s identity for a while yet.
