Sam Smith talks Brandon Flynn split and ‘messing up’ on gender pronouns

"I mess up, my mum messes up, my family messes up"

By Jamie Tabberer

Sam Smith has discussed their split with 13 Reasons Why actor Brandon Flynn in their latest interview – while admitting they still “mess up” when it comes to gender pronouns.

The Diamonds singer addressed the subjects with Sunday Times Style yesterday.

On their breakup with Brandon, who they dated for nine months in 2018, Sam said: “That was my longest relationship — the main relationship of my life — so there was a catharsis going on.

“When you write songs you may start with an initial inspiration, but then it becomes something else, a story that everyone can relate to. I also found it hard that the relationship was public.”

Speaking about the world’s interest in the relationship, Sam added: “I think there are ways to get around it, where you can maintain a level of privacy, but it was hard. I was 25 during that time and in many ways I seem a lot older now, but when it comes to relationships I am still a bit of a teenager.”

“When people correct themselves it is a wonderful feeling because people try”

The 28-year-old, who came out as non-binary last year, also said of pronouns: “I mess up, my mum messes up, my family messes up.

“What I have learnt over the past year is that it is not an ideal world. It would be wonderful if we could change lanes like that. When people correct themselves it is a wonderful feeling because people try.”

Sam, known for hits like Too Good at Goodbyes and Stay With Me, is currently gearing up for the release of their new album Love Goes.

The record drops on 30 October 2020.
