Sarah Jessica Parker has said she would not be OK with Kim Cattrall returning to the world of Sex and the City as Samantha Jones.
SJP and SATC co-stars Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis recently reprised their roles as Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte for HBO spin-off show And Just Like That…, which aired its finale last night.
Cattrall sat the show out, after saying in a previous interview that she took maneater Sam “past the finishing line” with the poorly-received 2011 Sex and the City 2 movie.
However, fans speculated whether Cattrall and Parker’s well-publicised feud was the reason for Cattrall’s absence.
It culminated in 2018, following Parker publicly consoling Cattrall over the death of her brother, with Cattrall replying on Instagram: “Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona.”
“Too much public history”
Speaking to Variety in a recent interview, SJP was asked if she’d be OK with Cattrall’s return.
“I don’t think I would,” she responded. “Because I think there’s just too much public history of feelings on her part that she’s shared. I haven’t participated in or read articles, although people are inclined to let me know.”
The 56-year-old added: “We didn’t go to Kim for this, you know. After we didn’t do the movie and the studio couldn’t meet what she wanted to do, we have to hear her and listen to her and what was important to her. It didn’t fit into what was important or needed for us.”
Sex and the City creator Michael Patrick King also weighed in on the matter, saying: “I have no realistic expectation of Kim Cattrall ever appearing again.”
