spin-off series The Carrie Diaries has been cancelled by US network The CW.

The show, which premiered in January 2013, was conceived as a teen prequel to Sex and the City, and followed a 16-year-old Carrie Bradshaw as she began to make a name for herself as a writer in New York City.

AnnaSophia Robb played the teenage Carrie, the role made famous by Sarah Jessica Parker, while Lindsay Gort appeared as a younger version of Kim Cattrall’s character Samantha Jones.

The first season of 13 episodes aired on The CW from January to April 2013, while a second season of 13 episodes began on The CW last October and wound up this January. There will be no third season, The CW confirmed last night (May 8).

The show received mixed reviews from TV critics and fans of the original Sex and the City TV series and failed to find a UK broadcaster during its two-season run.
