‘Sex and the City’ star Cynthia Nixon is running for New York governor
The ultimate Miranda move.
Sex And The City’s Cynthia Nixon has announced she’s running for governor of New York.
The 51-year-old actress, who played Miranda on the hit HBO series, announced her bid for governor on Monday (March 19) after first expressing her interest in running last August.
New York-born Nixon confirmed the news on Twitter alongside a video announcement as well as a link to her campaign website.
In the tweet, Nixon wrote: “I love New York, and today I’m announcing my candidacy for governor.”
The video features a voiceover from Nixon as footage of the actress and her family, including her LGBT activist wife Christine Marinoni, plays.
“New York is my home,” she says in the video. “I’ve never lived anywhere else. When I grew up here, it was just my mum and me in a one-bedroom fifth-floor walk-up.”
She continues: “Our leaders are letting us down. We are now the most unequal state in the country, with both incredible wealth and extreme poverty.”

“But something has to change. We want our government to work again, on health care, ending mass incarceration, fixing our broken subway. We are sick of politicians who care more about headlines and power than they do about us.”
Nixon, who has campaigned for LGBT rights and better public education, will challenge incumbent governor Andrew Cuomo for the Democratic nomination ahead of the midterm elections on November 6, CNN reports.
On her official campaign website Nixon revealed she voted for Cuomo in the past but that he’d proved himself to be “disappointing, dysfunctional and dishonest” over the last eight years.
She outlines plans for New York on the site, which include fully funded public schools, providing accessible and inexpensive healthcare, as well as reducing rent prices and providing affordable housing.
Nixon also took aim at the US President Donald Trump on her campaign website, writing: “Together, we could show the entire country and the world that in the era of Donald Trump, New Yorkers will come together and lead our nation forward.”
Meanwhile, Nixon made headlines last month after she was spotted reuniting with Sex And The City co-star Sarah Jessica Parker last month amidst her feud with fellow co-star Kim Cattrall.
