Shady Pines, Dad! A gay version of ‘The Golden Girls’ may be on the way
By Ross Semple
A gay version of the classic sitcom The Golden Girls could be coming out way soon.
The Golden Girls is one of the most iconic sitcoms of all time, featuring four older women who share a house together in Miami and get themselves into all kinds of hijinks. The original series aired between 1985 and 1992 and remains a firm favourite among gay men, who respond to the biting humour between Dorothy, Blanche, Rose, and Sophia.
The Golden Girls is about four people on the fringes of society who make a family for themselves, something that LGBT+ people can relate to.
Stan Zimmerman and James Berg, who wrote episodes of The Golden Girls along with shows like Roseanne and Gilmore Girls, have written the pilot of a series called Silver Foxes, which focuses on the lives of four older gay men.
“Every one of us is getting older,” Zimmerman said in an interview. “Especially with gays and lesbians and transgender, we create our own families—and that’s what The Golden Girls did. Those women came together and supported each other.”
The pair recently hosted a table read of the script, which was attended by George Takei, Leslie Jordan, and Bruce Vilanch among others. However, there has been no news on who will be starring in Silver Foxes.
Zimmerman and Berg are currently pitching the series to a variety of networks and streaming services.
