The special will start shooting in January 2015, with filming on the new series – Sherlock‘s fourth – beginning later next year. Air dates for the new episodes have yet to be announced.
The show’s co-creator Mark Gatiss said in a press release:
“Series Four! At last! It’s always special to return to Sherlock but this time it’s even more special as we’re doing… a Special! Not only THAT, we’ll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before. The whole Sherlock team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The Game is on – again!”
Sherlock
, created by Gatiss and Steven Moffat, first aired in 2010 and the three most recent episodes were shown in BBC One this January.
The show’s stars, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, have been in high demand ever since Sherlock launched. Cumberbatch will be seen later this year as Alan Turing in a biopic of the late codebreaker called The Imitation Game – click here to see preview pictures of Cumberbatch as Turing.
