Sky Atlantic has renewed horror drama Penny Dreadful for a second season.

The spooky show, a co-production between Sky Atlantic and US network Showtime, premiered earlier this month (May) and has been a hit with critics and TV viewers alike.

A new run of ten hour-long episodes will start shooting in Dublin, Ireland later this year, before airing in 2015.

Penny Dreadful, which is set in Victorian London, was created by screenwriter John Logan (Skyfall, Hugo) and counts Skyfall director Sam Mendes among its executive producers.

Its impressive ensemble cast includes Josh Hartnett, Billie Piper, Timothy Dalton, Reeve Carney and Eva Green.

Sky’s Stuart Murphy said in a press release: “Over the last few years we have made massive strides in bringing world class dramas to our customers’ screens. Penny Dreadful epitomises the cinematic scale of drama we have come to expect from Sky Atlantic and we are really looking forward to continuing our partnership with David Nevins and Showtime, John Logan and Sam Mendes.”

Meanwhile, the first season of Penny Dreadful continues on Tuesdays at 9pm on Sky Atlantic.
