‘Son of a Preacher Man’ gets a gay makeover in moving new music video

By Ben Kelly

A new music video sees the Dusty Springfield classic ‘Son Of A Preacher Man’ given a gay makeover.

The new video from US singer-songwriter Tom Goss sees two teenage boys engaging in a youthful romance, but one of the boys is the son of an anti-gay preacher.

The song contains all the same lyrics as the original Dusty track, but the video narrates the story of the same-sex love affair, often visualising the scenes depicted in the lyrics.

Speaking about the video, Goss said the story “hits home” to him.

“I had planned to become a Catholic priest,” he reveals. “I spent 18 months in seminary following college before I realised I was gay. I also attempted suicide when I was 13. Although it was for different reasons, it’s a place that I’ve been.”

Goss says he wants the LGBT community to feel as if the video was telling their story.

“I want them to be moved,” he says, “that’s why I’m doing this. There isn’t enough LGBT content being produced. Historically, people have been afraid to tell these stories – but I’m not.”

He adds, “I will always use my voice to help tell the stories of those who cannot.”
