Soundtrack of My Life | Hifi Sean
By Will Stroude
Hifi Sean found success in the ’80s with rock band the Soup Dragons. He then went on to create a successful career as DJ. His new album, the FT, features Yoko Ono, Crystal Waters and Billie Ray Martin.
What’s the first song you ever bought?
With my own money it was Get it On by T-Rex. A good few years ago I got to work with Mickey Finn from T-rex before he passed away. He knew Get It On was my favourite record so he gave me his own pristine copy which was the 2nd off the press after Marc Bolan’s copy; my prized possession.
Which song reminds you of falling in love?
American Spring – Fallin’ in love To me this is the perfect love song. Understated and gorgeous.
Do you have song that makes you cry?
The last track on my album with Alan Vega made me cry the other day. The emotions on that track for me at the moment are pretty overpowering.
What album changed your life?
T-Rex – The Slider. As a teenager I fell in love with its style of grooving guitar which was really sexy. Even though I did not know fully what sexy meant yet, but all I knew was it felt bloody good.
What song changed your life?
Likely in a funny sarcastic way ‘I’m Free’ by The Soup Dragons. On the Monday I was signing on the dole and on the Thursday I was on Top of the Pops and it kinda never stopped for 5 years.
If your life was a song title, what would it be?
Ah see I have done that with my previous band The High Fidelity: ‘2 up / 2 down’. Kind of sums me up perfectly.
What song do you wish you had written?
Obviously ‘Get It On’.
Who would be your ultimate duet?
I think I have done this already on my new album with Fred Schneider from the B-52’s on the song ‘Truck’. We’re both being truckers on a convoy, singing down CB radio microphones; random and genius!
What’s the last album you listened to?
My own album ‘Ft.’ from start to finish. I got the vinyl copies in and I sat back and thought I better check them out, but I ended up listening to the whole 70 minutes from start to finish and really enjoyed the whole experience.
What song is your guilty pleasure?
I do not believe in guilty pleasures as you should not be embarrassed by your own personal tastes, even the odd random ones. We all have the odd random ones.
What’s your favourite song by a gay artist?
‘Anything’ by Sylvester James Jr.
The album ‘Ft’ is out Friday 16th September.
