ITV has announced that Harry Hill will front a revival of classic talent show Stars in Their Eyes.

Stars in Their Eyes – which featured members of the public impersonating their favourite pop idols – launched in 1990 and ran for 16 series until 2006, becoming a mainstay of ITV’s Saturday night schedule. Hill once competed on a special celebrity edition of the series.

“Without a doubt, appearing on Stars in their Eyes as Morrissey all those years ago (although beaten, unfairly in my view, by Kirsty Young’s Peggy Lee) was one of the highlights of my light entertainment career,” Hill said in a press release.

“So imagine the smile bought to my lips when I was asked by ITV at a secret breakfast meeting in a top London hotel to take the reigns of this Rolls Royce of pop impression talent shows and walk in the footsteps of showbiz giants Crowther, Kelly and Deeley! And on ITV too! Dust off the wigs and sequins – I’m coming home!”

Previously, the show’s longest-running presenter was Matthew Kelly, who hosted the show between 1993 and 2004, and coined the iconic phrase: “Tonight Matthew, I’m going to be…” The late Leslie Crowther and Cat Deeley also helmed the show for several series, while Russ Abbott and Davina McCall put in stints as guest presenters.

During the show’s 16-year run, the most impersonated stars were Cher, Kylie Minogue, George Michael and Dolly Parton.

A premiere date for the new series of Stars in Their Eyes will be announced later in the year.
