Taron Egerton has met with Marvel execs about playing Wolverine

Egerton says he's conversed with Marvel producers about taking on the iconic MCU role

Taron Egerton has said he would be “excited” to get his claws on the role of Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe if the opportunity came his way.

Further to that, the actor has even met with Marvel’s head honcho, Kevin Feige, about the possibility of that actually happening. 

In an interview with the New York Times the actor, 32, says: “I’d be excited but I’d be apprehensive as well, because Hugh [Jackman] is so associated with the role that I’d wonder if it’d be very difficult for someone else to do it.” 

“But,” he adds, “hopefully if it does come around, they’ll give me a shot.”

Hugh Jackman came to international prominence through his role as the iconic X-Man in the franchise then owned by 20th Century Fox. 

In a deal between Fox and Disney, the latter earned the rights to all the X-Men characters and has publicly hinted at an MCU take on the X-Men sometime in the future. 

Egerton and Jackman previously shared the screen in the 2016 sports drama Eddie The Eagle. One fan joked whether Jackman had given Egerton his blessing during the filming. 

This isn’t the first time Egerton has spoken about taking on the Wolverine.

In a 2020 interview with British GQ he spoke about fan art that depicted him with the mutant’s claws.

“That anyone thinks I would be good for the part is really flattering,” Egerton said at the time. 

It’s not unusual for a star to be tight-lipped, especially when it comes to roles with the MCU, so Egerton’s suggestion reveals he may be a front runner for Wolverine. 

Elsewhere in the New York Times interview, Egerton spoke for the first time about his decision to drop out of the revival of the West End show Cock.
