‘The Golden Girls’ is returning to UK television screens

Finally some good news: The Golden Girls is returning to UK television screens.
Years after the legendary sitcom was last shown on these shores, Channel 5 will begin airing all 180 episodes on weekdays at 12.40pm from Monday 27 April – and the thought of an extended lockdown just got hella easier.
Starring Betty White and late actresses Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty as four friends sharing a house in Miami, The Golden Girls aired for seven seasons between 195-1992, offering a rare example of a series revolving around the everyday trials of ‘older’ women.
During its original acclaimed run on NBC, the show picked up the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series twice, as well as three Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
All four lead actresses also won an Emmy Award for their performances, too, making The Golden Girls just one of three sitcoms to achieve the feat.
The Golden Girls was and remains fiercely funny and unapologetically outspoken television, and in the dark days of the late ‘80s refused to shy away from considered storylines about Aids and same-sex marriage.
