Eight years after the curtain went up on one of the biggest reality TV phenomenons of the noughties, The Hills is making a comeback.

The surprise news was revealed at the MTV VMA Awards on Monday night (August 21) where some of The Hills’ original cast members reunited to announce the announce the show’s return to screens.

According to MTV, The Hills: New Beginnings will see the return of original stars “alongside their children and friends, and follow their personal and professional lives while living in Los Angeles.”

Heidi and Spencer Pratt, Audrina Patridge and Stephanie Pratt are all in attendance and are expected to document their drama-filled lives once again, along with supporting cast members such as Frankie Delgado and Justin Bobby.

Notably absent from proceedings were orignal lead Lauren Conrad, who departed the show mid-way through season five, as well as Whitney Port and Launren’s eventual replacement Kristen Cavallari.

A trailer for the rebooted series sees a cover of the show’s theme tune, ‘Unwritten’ by Natasha Bedingfield’ playing as shots of Los Angeles roll and Stephanie Pratt says in voiceover. “It’s like we’re all growing up. It’s weird.”

Born as a spin-off of teen reality drama Laguna Beach: The Real Orange CountryThe Hills debuted on MTV in May 2006 documenting 19-year-old Lauren Conrad’s attempts to make it big in Los Angeles as she moved in with best friend Heidi Montag and got an internship at Teen Vogue.

The show quickly became a cultural touchstone after Lauren and Heidi’s colossal falling out, sparked by accusations that Heidi’s soon-to-be husband Spencer had fed a sex tape scandal about Lauren to the press – leading to the now-immortal lines like “You know what you did”, and “I want to forgive you, and I want to forget you.”

The Hills finally wrapped in 2010 after six seasons, with Stephanie Pratt later joining British reality series Made in Chelsea and Heidi and Spencer – who now have a 10-month-old son – remaining in the public eye with appearances on shows like I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here and Celebrity Big Brother.

There’s not word on when The Hills: New Beginnings will arrive on screen, but if there’s one thing we know about this lot: it won’t come quietly.
