Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has said he’s not surprised trans and non-binary people have found a home within the story of The Matrix – a sentiment echoed by co-star Jessica Henwick ahead of the pair’s new film The Matrix Resurrections.
Abdul-Mateen II and Henwick play Morpheus and Bugs respectively in the latest Matrix installment, which is in cinemas now.
In an interview with Attitude, the pair responded to the film’s direct reference to the fan theory that the Matrix is a metaphor for the trans experience – something confirmed by co-director of the first three films, Lilly Wachowski.
Lana and sister Lilly co-directed the first films and have since come out as trans. Lilly is directing the fourth film solo.
“It’s made in the spirit of inclusion”
Abdul-Mateen II – who has previously starred in Candyman – told Attitude: “One of the cool things about The Matrix is there’s a way in for everyone. It’s made in the spirit of inclusion.
“[…] In terms of sci-fi and action films, it was one of the most – it was groundbreaking in terms of diversity. Diversity of ideas, diversity of cast. And so it’s not surprising to me that that community is also finding a home within the stories of The Matrix.”
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens actor Jessica Henwick added: Added Henwick: “I love it. Lana was so ahead of the game and obviously, everything she makes is very personal to her.”
The Matrix Resurrections is in cinemas from 22 December.
