The powerful reason RuPaul’s Drag Race was censored by Logo TV this week
By Will Stroude
Yesterday (October 11), was National Coming Out Day, with LGBT people across the world recounting their coming out stories, celebrating each others bravery, and offering advice and solidarity to those still waiting, or unable, to come out safely.
Logo TV, the American network which shows gay-interest programmes such as Finding Prince Charming and RuPaul’s Drag Race, used the opportunity to remind viewers that the freedom to live openly was a right hard-fought for – and one that is not enjoyed by everyone across the world – by censoring all of its LGBT-related content.
Throughout the day, the channel aired a heavily-censored back-to-back marathon of season eight of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 8.
Logo also censored its web and social content, to help raise awareness of countries where content and information can be blocked if it features, or praises LGBT people. And with countries such as Indonesia continuing to clamp down on LGBT media representation, it’s more important than ever that the community remains vigilant and aware.
