The Vamps drummer Tristan Evans has claimed that his bandmate James McVey is responsible for their gay following.

Evans, 19, told attitude.co.uk that the band have spotted “a few dudes” at their recent shows, and said he believes that their music is now appealing to more than just teenage girls.

Guitarist McVey, 20, has attracted attention after posting a series of shirtless pictures on social media – check them out here and here.

Asked if he thinks the band has a gay following, Evans said: “Yes, I think there’s a small minority now. Especially when James posts shirtless pictures! I can’t do that, because I don’t have a good body!

“There are a few dudes in the audience at our shows. We saw a few in the Isle of Wight, and that was cool.”

The drummer also recalled one of their weirdest fan experiences, when the band were sent a “bag of pubes” in the post.

“That was pretty weird,” he admitted. “They were sent to the band from a crazy, hardcore fan.”

The four-piece band are set to embark on their first UK headline tour in September, but have already supported the likes of Taylor Swift, The Wanted and McFly at live shows over the past year.

Evans said that it was Swift – who they opened for at five London O2 Arena dates in February – who taught them the most.

On the I Knew You Were Trouble singer, he said: “She is so down to earth and we hang out with her. We’re friends with her, because she’s so normal. She’s so nice to us. It was a really fun show. She’s a great performer.”

Meanwhile, Demi Lovato features on the band’s latest single Somebody To You, which follows their previous hits Can We Dance, Last Night and Wild Heart.

Despite achieving chart success with their first three singles, and their debut album Meet The Vamps, the band have yet to top the charts, but Evans thinks it may be “bad luck” if they do reach number one.

“I think it’s actually going to be bad luck if we get a Number One! No, we would love to get a number one eventually, but we don’t go out and say ‘we want a Number One’.

“It would be lovely, but as long as the fans enjoy the music, that’s all that matters to us,” he explained.
