Tom Hardy’s Venom will have ‘coming out party’ in sequel, says director
Andy Serkis was speaking to Uproxx ahead of the release of Venom: Let There Be Carnage

The director of the upcoming Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Andy Serkis, has said that the anti-hero has a “coming out” in the sequel to 2018’s Venom, starring Tom Hardy.
In an interview ahead of the movie’s release Andy Serkis, known for his iconic roles in The Lord of the Rings and The Planet of the Apes film franchises, discussed directing the sequel and the relationship between Eddie Brock (Hardy) and Venom (Hardy), who inhabits the former’s body.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage takes place a year after the events of the 2018 film and sees journalist Eddie Brock struggle to adjust his life as a host for the alien symbiote Venom. Together they face new villain Carnage, played by Woody Harrelson.
“This is Venom’s coming out party”
In an interview with Uproxx, Andy Serkis describes a scene where Eddie and Venom, who he says are in an “odd couple” place in their relationship, attend a party that he likens to an LGBTQ festival.
He says: “Tom [Hardy] and Kelly [Marcel, co-writer] were always about Venom coming out and going to a party that was a very sort of an LGBTQIA kind of festival, really, I’d call it, and so this is his coming out party basically. This is Venom’s coming-out party.”
When asked further about the comparison to coming out Serkis develops the comparison by saying: “He [Venom] says in the movie, “We must stop this cruel treatment of aliens.” He said, “You know, we all live on this ball of rock,” you know? And so, he inadvertently becomes a kind of… . He’s speaking for freedom of the other.”
He adds that the two are in a “love affair”.
The two characters certainly had an interesting dynamic in the first film and comparing them to the classic odd couple format works, but them being in love hadn’t occurred to us.
Fans of the film are more than happy to accept Venom into the LGBTQ community with one asking when he’d become an official queer icon.
