Tonys 2014: Neil Patrick Harris’s ‘Hedwig’ leads winners

Neil Patrick Harris’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch won big at the Tony Awards in New York City last night (June 8).
Harris was named Leading Actor in a Musical for his turn as the eponymous Hedwig, an East German transgender singer, while the production also won Best Revival of a Musical.
His co-star Lena Hall won Best Featured Actress in a Musical, beating the likes of Lauren Worsham and Anika Larsen.
On his victory, Harris said: “A year ago I was hosting the Tonys – this is crazy.”
“Playing Hedwig is an absolute joy. It’s a role that I was terrified of,” he admitted. “In taking it on, it’s changed me and it’s challenged me. It’s exhausting, and it’s so fun to perform it.”
Meanwhile, Bryan Cranston’s All The Way was also one of the major winners of the night. The Breaking Bad star scooped the Leading Actor in a Play prize, while the production won Best Play.
Elsewhere, Rosie O’Donnell received the prestigious Isabelle Stevenson Award. The performer, writer and producer was honoured for her achievements, including her work with New York City’s public school children through her Rosie’s Theater Kids organisation.
A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder was named Best Musical, while A Raisin in the Sun triumphed in the Play Revival category.
