Troye Sivan admits he got ‘choked up’ when fan came out to mum mid-show
By Ben Kelly
Troye Sivan has noted that people propose at his shows “just for the lols” as he discussed the powerful bond he has experienced with fans on his Blue Neighbourhood Tour.
Sivan recounted how he helped one fan come out to her mother at his concert in Washington D.C. in March by reading out her note live on stage.
“I got all choked up and couldn’t really look at her,” the 20-year-old – who came out publicly in a YouTube video in 2013 – told BBC Newsbeat.
“I got off stage and I watched this video that someone took of Kelly and her mum meeting outside of the venue after the show and it’s one of the most touching things I’ve ever seen.”

Sivan also expressed his gratitude at how people have embraced an appreciation for his music, alongside a greater acceptance of themselves – particularly among his LGBT fans.
“It’s really amazing and kind of overwhelming in a way that people are committing themselves to the music in that way,” he said. “It’s humbling.”
He added: “Somebody’s going to propose at every show and is not going to want to get married and just do it for the lols. But I’m fine with that.”
In the interview, he also discussed having seen lyrics from his various songs tattooed on fans, and the direction in which he feels Internet fame is going.
“The internet’s a very big place and I think getting seen in that environment is more difficult than ever,” he said. “At the same time, there are ways to be seen and realise what works and what doesn’t and keep shifting. I reckon it could still happen for anyone.”
