Tyler, the Creator thanks British boys for making his nights ‘fun’ during Brits acceptance speech – WATCH

The 28-year-old rapper continued to make allusions to his sexuality as he was named Best International Male Solo Artist.

Tyler, the Creator continued to make allusions to his sexuality at the Brit Awards on Tuesday (18 February) when he thanked British boys for making his nights “fun” during his acceptance speech for Best International Male Solo Artist.

The ‘Earfquake’ rapper, who has maintained an air of mystery around his sexuality ever since he included lyrics about kissing boys on 2017’s Flower Boy, accepted his award from singer Paloma Faith and 24 star Kiefer Sutherland before declaring in front of the audience at London’s O2 Arena: “Shout out to all the UK boys who keep this place fun for me at night.”

Tyler, who was famously banned from entering the UK by the Home Office five years ago over concerns his lyrics – which often included the word f*ggot – promoted hatred, went on to ironically thank former Prime Minister and then Home Secretary Theresa May for her role in his visa struggles.

“I want to give a special shout out to someone who I hold dear to my heart, who made it where I couldn’t come to this country five years ago”, he said.

“I know she’s at home, pissed off. Thank you, Theresa May!”

Tyler, whose fifth studio album, the critically-acclaimed Igor, was released last year, has previously described his sexuality as “unexplainable”.

“It’s still such a grey area with people, which is cool with me” the Texas-born musician said in a 2018 interview with Fantastic Man.

“Even though I’m considered loud and out there, I’m private, which is weird dichotomy.

“The juxtaposition of loud and quiet is weird,” he added.

Asked why he decided to address his sexuality in his music (2018’s ‘Okra’ notably included the line: ‘Timothée Chalamet to come get at me’), Tyler explained: “I don’t know. It’s a literal question and the thing about humans is we hate not having an answer.

“We hate not being in the know. So people will bullshit answers, make shit up, instead of being just, like… I don’t know.

“There are some things that are just unexplainable.”

Elsewhere at the Brits, Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi was the night’s big winner, taking home two awards: Best British Male Solo Artist, and Song of the Year, for ‘Someone You Loved’.
