Union J’s Jaymi Hensley has revealed that he had to come out to his father when he bumped into him whilst on a date.
The You Got It All singer explained that he had yet to speak openly about his sexuality at the time, but decided to be honest when his father walked into the restaurant he was eating in with his boyfriend at the time.
Speaking on BBC Three’s Sweat the Small Stuff, Jaymi said: “I wasn’t out then, so I was just trying to be like we’re just friends, sit next to me, don’t sit opposite me. Then my dad came to the restaurant with his girlfriend and sat on the table next to us.
“I was like, ‘Hi dad, this is my boyfriend’. Dad didn’t know I was gay. That’s how my dad found out.”
“The guy was really camp so there was no trying to hide it, it’s not like, ‘This is my friend from football’,” he added.
Last month, Hensley posed for the cover of Attitude’s special edition magazine aTEEN, the first magazine aimed specifically at gay teenagers – find out more here.
