is making history this week by airing the first gay male wedding on a US daytime soap.

The episodes will see Will Horton (Guy Wilson) and Sonny Kiriakis (Freddie Smith) become the first male couple to tie the knot, after a female same-sex wedding aired in 2009 on ABC’s All My Children.

The characters of Will and Sonny have starred in the soap’s first gay storyline, which began back in 2011 and featured their engagement on Valentine’s Day this year.

The role of Will was played by Chandler Massey at the beginning of the plot, before being replaced by Wilson last year.

Earlier this year, the Disney Channel featured its first ever gay characters in its 31-year history, during an episode sitcom Good Luck Charlie.

A US parents’ group later launched a campaign to compel advertisers to boycott the Disney Channel over the “gay moms” storyline.
