Vanessa White unveils latest track ‘Low Key’, announces new EP
By Will Stroude
It’s hard to believe it’s been over two years since The Saturdays began their extended ‘hiatus’, but since then we’ve watched with interest what each of the girls has done next.
While Frankie’s taken to the Strictly dancefloor and Rochelle’s focused her attentions on high profile presenting gig alongside husband Marvin, Una, Mollie and Vanessa have stuck to their musical guns; albeit in rather different ways.
While Voice of Ireland judge Una has got back to her folk roots and Mollie’s launched her own assault on the charts with the bubblegum ‘Back to You’, Vanessa began carving her own path as an R&B queen with February’s first solo EP Chapter One, and has seen the hip-hops heavyweight lining up to get on board with the project’s follow-up, the aptly-named Chapter Two.
After hitting the studio with the likes of PRGRSN, Wizzy Wow, Thomas Eriksen, Shakka and Snakehips, the youngest ex-Saturday has just released the EP’s first track ‘Low Key’. Produced by Chloe Martini and featuring Illa J, the track is a sexy slice of ’90s-tinged R&B that sees Vanessa firmly in her new grown-up groove.
“When I launched my solo project I was really looking forward to people finally getting to see the real me, but even with that, people have their own ideas of what the ‘real me’ should be, especially coming from a pop band,” the 26-year-old told Complex magazine.
“I was only 16 when I started my career and in the last few years I’ve discovered who I am and the music I want to make. It’s been a challenge fighting industry perceptions but now I’m getting better at saying “fuck it this is the real me so you can take it or leave it”. At the end of the day, it’s about the music and I want to connect with people who love R&B and this sound.
‘Low Key’ feat. Illa J is out now, with Vanessa’s second solo EP ‘Chapter Two’ to follow later in the year.
