Watch | Ellen Page to explore gay life around the globe in new docu-series ‘Gaycation’

Ellen Page is stepping out of character to step into the lives of gay people across the world in a new documentary series.

In March, the 28-year-old Oscar-nominated actress will headline Gaycation, a new documentary series that will debut on the new US television channel Viceland.

“I’m on a journey to explore what it means to lesbian, gay, bi or trans all around the world,” Page explains in the trailer.

Filmed with the help of her best friend Ian Daniel, across the course of the series the pair will showcase interviews from countries including Japan, Jamaica and Brazil and the United States.

“We want to join the celebration, document the struggles, feel the love and the hate, and bring home every human story we encounter along the way,” the Freeheld star continues.

“Being gay is not a choice. The amount of people that struggle so much because of the shame they feel, or the fear of being oppressed, or hurt, or killed, why would somebody make that choice?”

Page told Buzzfeed the US leg of the shoot really hit home to her, after she was left feeling frustrated and sad after comparing local stories from the gay community to those abroad. “It’s so hard for me to wrap my head around why people are treated that way,” she said.

And then, of course, you feel so inspired and so humbled by just how much you’ve been able to learn, how extraordinary people have been to us, how vulnerable and generous they are. That’s what you’re left with.”

The premiere episode of Gaycation is currently scheduled to air on March 2 at 10pm.
