With both Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman recreating the lives of Freddie Mercury and Elton John on the big screen (to varying degrees of success, depending on your view), there’s no denying that big gay musicial biopics are all the rage right now – and guess what Mimi, we’re hungry for more.
Thankfully, we’ve just got our first look at Renée Zellweger as Judy Garland in Rupert Goold’s upcoming musical drama Judy, and the good news is that on first impression it looks like it’s looks like a retelling that won’t give you The Jitterbug.
Set to hit UK cinemas this October, Judy sees Zellweger portray Garland during the final year of the legendary singer, actress and gay icon’s life, and will include beloved tracks including ‘Over the Rainbow’, which can be heard in the newly-released teaser trailer.
Zellweger, 50, reportedly spent two hours a day in the make-up chair to undergo the tranformation into The Wizard of Oz star, and there’s no denying the uncanncy esemblance in this first teaser, which shows Garland in London as she prepares for a five-week run of sell-out show sin London in early 1969.
“It was such a joy learning about the magnificence of this person,” Zellweger told People this week.
“I always admired her. She was so quick and so funny. She could hit the ball back with the best of them.”
Based on the Olivier and Tony nominated 2012 Broadway play End of the Rainbow, Judy will also delve into Garlands’s relationship with fifth husband and nightclub manager Mickey Deans (played by American Horro Story’s Finn Whittrock), who she married in March 1969 just three months before her death at 47 from an accidental barbituate overdose.
Judy is set to hit cinemas in the US on 27 September and in the UK on 4 October. Check out the first teaser trailer below:
