Watch: Strangers defend gay couple from homophobic abuse
By Will Stroude
What would you do if you saw a pair of prospective gay parents being harassed in public?
That’s the question raised recently by ABC’s hidden camera show What Would You Do?, which captures the reaction of the general public to challenging scenes – often of discrimination and prejudice.
A recent scene from show staged an adoption meeting between an expecting mother and two prospective parents – both of whom happened to be men – before another actor began vocally criticising the arrangement.
The uplifting scenes that follow sees the residents of Plainfield, New Jersey – of all ages, sexes and races – rushing to the gay couple’s defence, and telling the ‘phobe in no uncertain terms to back off. Even one man who readily admits he finds the idea of same-sex parenting uncomfortable immediately tells her to leave them alone and let them live their lives.
Consider our faith in humanity restored – much like heart-warming the ‘Two men hold hands‘ video from Portugal last week.
