Watch: The awkward moment TV anchor doesn’t realise Steve Grand is gay
By Will Stroude
Seems like one poor TV host didn’t read her notes before interviewing Steve Grand on Saturday (September 12), not realising that the US country singer is gay.
While appearing on a local San Diego new programme over the weekend, the All-American Boy singer was asked by one of the two anchors whether he draws musical inspiration from “the poor women that date you”.
An awkward pause ensues, after which Grand quickly explains: “Well no… I’m gay, so it’s guys”, before telling the presenter: “It’s all the same really”.
“I think that it’s good that people hear me and they may not even realize that I’m singing about guys” he adds. “And I think that is a testament to the fact that we do really all love the same, we lose the same, we feel heartache the same and that’s what it’s all about.”
After the cringey moment, the other host went on to ask the 25-year-old about being publicly asked to the Marine Corps ball by a gay marine earlier this month – an invitation which Grand accepted.
“I was really touched by him asking me,” he told the host. “I don’t think I’ve got an invitation like that before”.

Recalling the awkward incident on Facebook afterwards, Grand wrote: “Someone skipped over a possibly relevant bullet point… lol”.
He went on: “I used the opportunity to talk about how no matter who we love, as humans, we all love the same… That our experiences are far more alike than different… Love is a human experience, not specified to one sexual orientation or another… etc.”
He explained that he’d taken in all in good humour thought, adding: “As soon as we cut the segment I burst out laughing and let the woman know it was all okay.”
“I understand they are meeting new people every couple of minutes and are expected to entertain and engage audiences all over the state so I don’t post this at all as a criticism. If I was legit famous it would be one thing, but I still feel grateful for all the opportunities I am afforded to talk about my life and my work.
“This was just a silly moment I found to be pretty hilarious. Lol.”
Back in July, Grand – who has previously said that “99% of the hate” he receives online is from other gay men – was forced to defend his skimpy, “gay” swimwear, saying that people who are concerned about his “stereotypical” appearance are battling their own internalised homophobia.
