A Syrian refugee and Finnish student embark on an unexpected love affair in this Scandinavian sizzler.

Since the release of Love, Simon back in April, it’s felt like there’s been a bit of an LGBT film drought this summer.
All that’s set to change over the next few months though, with not one but two gay conversion therapy dramas – The Miseducation of Cameron Post and Boy, Erased – set to hit UK cinemas, but if that all sounds a bit doom and gloom for your taste, a new Finnish romantic drama that’s been compared to God’s Own Country might be the movie for you.
Starring Tom of Finland‘s Janne Puustinen, A Moment in the Reeds tells the story of Leevi, a student who returns home from Paris to Finland for the summer where he helps his father renovate their summer house in the city.
An extra pair of hands is required so Tareq (Boodi Kabbani), a Syrian asylum seeker is hired. But when Leevi’s father head back to the city, however… oh come on, you see where this is heading.
Directed Mikko Makela, A Moment in the Reeds has already gained plenty of buzz on the LGBT film circuit, being nominated for Outstanding Feature at this year’s Frameline San Francisco International LGBTQ Festival.
It’s due to be released on DVD and video-on-demand on October 15, but if you can’t wait until then, special showings are being held across the country complete with a live Q&A with the director.
Screenings are taking place at London’s Picturehouse Central on 29 August, Picturehouse Cambridge on 6 September, and Broadway Nottingham on 30 September.
