Will ‘Corrie’s new gay storyline wind people up?

A new storyline for Coronation Street’s Sean Tully has been confirmed – which will see the barman embark on a romance with a local Weatherfield vicar.
Antony Cotton’s character, Sean, will fall for the good-looking clergyman after meeting him on a night out, ITV have announced.
Sean is later surprised when Billy – who will be played by Shakespeare in Love actor Daniel Brocklebank – introduces himself as the new vicar at Emily Bishop’s local church, St. Mary’s.
In a statement Antony Cotton said: “I am thrilled that Sean is to find love again, especially with this unique and exciting storyline. I’m sure it’ll have its ups and downs but that’s what makes Coronation Street great. Hopefully it will be tender, funny and honest. Heaven!”
The 39-year-old actor had previously teased that the storyline had the potential to “wind a lot of people up”.
Speaking to attitude.co.uk earlier this year (June), the former Queer as Folk star said: “That’s what television drama should do, it should provoke people and push people’s buttons. That can only be a good thing.”
Daniel Brocklebank, who is also gay, added in a statement: “I am thrilled to be joining Coronation Street. I’m hugely excited to be part of something that is such an institution. I’m really looking forward to working with Antony Cotton and the rest of the cast, as well as joining my best mate Hayley Tamaddon [Andrea Beckett] on the cobbles.”
Daniel Brocklebank is set to begin his filming scenes next month (October) and will appear on-screen from December.
