'Will & Grace' revival already renewed for a second season

doesn’t even come back for another month, but the show has already been given the green light for a second season.

Yesterday NBC announced that the sitcom will return for a second season, consisting of 13 episodes, Variety reports. Four additional episodes were also added to the first season’s run, bringing the total to 16.

The announcement was made at the Television Critics Association event in Los Angeles, which was attended by the show’s cast and its creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan.

The crew are working together for the first time since the original series concluded in 2006. Kohan said that it “felt good” to be back together again. “Why wouldn’t we do this?” he said.

Debra Messing said that the revival feels like “coming home”.

“We laughed so hard. For the last year, it’s been a confusing time and I haven’t laughed very much, and to come back together and to laugh out loud and to be surprised by one another and to have new stories to tell and to have another opportunity to do it, it’s a no-brainer.”

Eric McCormack thanked fans for their support for the show’s return. “There’s been a very non-cynical, nonjudgmental response,” he said. “That made me feel like we have a place and we’re not going to fighting an uphill battle…I thought, why not?”

The return of Will & Grace has been in the works since the cast reunited last year for a sketch about the presidential election. Earlier this week Mutchnick revealed that the events of the series’ finale will be completely ignored. In the finale, Will & Grace go their separate ways for over a decade, before bumping into each other when their kids ended up at the same college and reigniting their friendship.

“When the decision was made to bring the series back, we were like, well, we left them with kids, right? And if they have children, then it has to be about them being parents, ‘cause presumably it would be a priority in their lives. And if it wasn’t a priority in their lives, then they’re still parents, they’re just bad parents, right?” Mutchnick said.

“We frankly did not want to see them being either good parents or bad parents. We wanted them to be Will and Grace,” he added.

So basically, Will & Grace will both be how we remembered them best – single and childless.

Will & Grace premieres on September 28 on NBC in the US. No word on a UK broadcaster just yet. The original series was broadcast on Channel 4.
