Xavier Dolan reveals bottoming onscreen doesn’t come naturally to him
By Will Stroude
Xavier Dolan, the rising gay actor, writer and director who’s been making waves in the film world over the last few years, has reflected on his experience of bottoming for a sex scene in his first feature-length movie.
The 27-year-old directed and starred in 2009’s I Killed My Mother, a semi-autobiographical tale of a turbulent relation between a mother and a 16-year-old high school student coming to terms with his sexuality.
One notable scene sees Dolan’s character have sex with his boyfriend while redecorating a room, but the actor and director has revealed in a new interview that portraying bottoming on camera wasn’t the most natural of ‘positions’ for him.
Reflecting on the scene with Vulture Magazine, Dolan, , who also directed the video for Adele’s ‘Hello’ last year, said: “You know what? I don’t think I would do that now. And I’m not even a bottom, actually, if we want to go there.”
When the interviewer went on to say that Dolan’s 2013 film Tom at the Farm, feels like “dance between a submissive protagonist and a domineering top”, Dolan replies: I don’t have a problem with putting myself in a submissive position.”
He continues: “Are you trying to make me confess? Are you trying to make me come out as a bottom here?”
When the interview tells him that there;s “also ‘vers’,” Dolan replies, “I’m not”, before adding that he is “strictly” the only other option left.
Well, the more you know.
While Dolan both wrote and directed I Killed My Mother, he admitted that performing was the most enjoyable part of the experience for him.
“Acting is liberating,” he explained. Filmmaking is not liberating — the loneliness and the responsibilities consume you. When you’re acting, you’re letting something out, and when you’re directing, you’re absorbing everything.”
