Xena will be openly gay in upcoming Warrior Princess reboot

The reboot of classic 90s show Xena: Warrior Princess, will see its title character explicitly presented as gay, writer Javier Grillo-Marzuach has said.

Fans have always read into the relationship between Xena and her companion Gabrielle, who have been long considered a thinly-veiled lesbian couple. Now, the man who will write the reboot has said he intends to open up any ambiguity surrounding Xena’s sexuality.

Taking part in a Tumblr Q&A, Grillo-Marzuach said, “There is no reason to bring back Xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication in the 1990s.”

He added: “It will also express my view of the world – which is only further informed by what is happening right now – and it is not too difficult to know what that is if you do some digging.”

Xena: Warrior Princess ran from 1995 to 2001, and centered on an infamous warrior on a quest to seek redemption for her past sins against the innocent by using her formidable fighting skills to now help those who are unable to defend themselves.

NBC are producing the reboot of the show, which is expected to air at some point in 2016.
