Zayn’s ‘Pillowtalk’ makes US chart history

By Troy Nankervis

Zayn Malik has proven he really can deliver the goods as a solo artist, as his debut single ‘Pillowtalk’ has shot to the very top of the Billboard charts in the United States, becoming the first ever debut single single by a British artist to do so.

Entering the Billboard Hot 100 chart at Number One, the 23-year-old’s raunchy new track about has also bettered the US chart record of his former band One Direction, who’s highest-placed song remains 2013’s ‘Best Song Ever’, which peaked at number two, reports The Independent.

Zayn now joins the ranks of just 25 other artists who’ve had a song debut at the top spot – including fellow Brit Adele, whose track ‘Hello’ was the last song to do so.

And to mark the milestone, Zayn posted a black and white image to Instagram, where he holds a mammoth bundle of balloons, the number ‘1’ featuring in the batch.

Zayn told The Sunday Times the first single was about something “so pure, so dirty and raw,” adding, “everybody has sex and it’s something people want to hear about.”

Directed by Bouha Kazmi, the film clip to ‘Pillowtalk’ sees the singer up close with model Gigi Hadid, and has been viewed almost 65 million times on YouTube.

Zayn’s debut album Mind of Mine will be released on 25 March, exactly a year since he announced his departure from One Direction.
