Our Son actor Luke Evans has said he is “happy” for his co-star Billy Porter to win an award that they are both nominated for.

The Welsh actor, 44, was nominated for Best Performance in a Male Role in a Feature Film, sponsored by Attitude Magazine, at the Iris Prize LGBTQ+ Film Festival earlier this month.

In Our Son, Evans and Porter play gay dads going through divorce with an eight-year-old son. Speaking previously about the film, Luke Evans said “It’s Kramer vs. Kramer for the gay community.”

Asked about the nomination on the BBC’s The One Show on Friday (6 October), Evans described it as a “special film to make.” As well as praising the “really powerful, very moving portrayal,” of divorce, he was full of praise for Porter, who he said was “wonderful.”

Continuing, Evans said, “It’s lovely that people have appreciated it and really like it enough for it to be nominated.”

Asked if he had spoken to Porter since nominations were announced and whether they’d challenged one another for the win Evans graciously said: “I’m happy for him [Porter] to win. He’s got better clothes than me.”

The Iris Prize LGBTQ+ Film Festival returns for a 17th edition from Tuesday 10 – Sunday 15 October. The winners of the awards will be announced during the Iris Awards Show on Saturday 14 October.

Tickets are available here as well as in person from 10 -15 October 2023 at the Festival Box Office at Vue Cardiff. Full details about Iris Prize can also be found here.
