School is officially back in session after Netflix confirmed that Heartbreak High is returning for a second season.

The show is a re-imagination of an iconic piece of Australian television and debuted on the streaming service in September.

Heartbreak High follows students and teachers at Hartley High through romance, drama, and more.

The first season featured an array of queer characters including the non-binary Darren Rivers (James Majoos) Dustin “Dusty” Reid (Joshua Heuston) who identifies as bisexual, lesbian lovers Quinni Gallagher-Jones and Sasha So, played by Chloe Hayden and Gemma Chua-Tran respectively.

There’s also Malaki Mitchell (Thomas Weatherall), who is also bisexual, and the asexual Douglas “Ca$h” Piggott (Will McDonald)

After Netflix tweeted the news on Wednesday (19 October) fans began celebrating with one person typing, “YES YES YESSSS OMG I NEED TO SEE CA$H AGAIN AND KNOW HES OKAY”

Meanwhile, others took aim at Netflix for not renewing another LGBTQ series, First Kill, which was cancelled after one season.

One person tweeted a gif of a grumpy-looking Stanley from the US office with the caption: “Me waiting on the renewal of #FirstKill season 2 that is well deserved.”

Someone else added: “WTF?! It’s getting real hard hiding the double standard for not renewing First Kill. Like, really?”

Heartbreak High will see the cast and creators reassemble in Sydney (Gadigal, Dharug, Dharawal, and Ku-ring-gai lands)

Since its debut in mid-September, it has remained in Australia’s top 10 TV shows on Netflix for five weeks since release.

It also spent three weeks in the global top 10 TV shows on Netflix. It amassed more than 42.6 million hours viewed in the three weeks.

The show reached the top 10 in 43 countries and #heartbreakhigh had over 300 million views on TikTok.
