The American singer Omar Apollo has responded to someone questioning whether he’s “queerbaiting” or not and it’s a pretty forthright response.

Omar, whose debut album, Ivory, came out earlier this year, has publicly addressed his sexuality before, saying in an NPR interview in April: “I’m very gay”.

On Monday (28 November) someone tweeted: “Is omar apollo another queerbaiting singer? like those type ‘i don’t label myself let me wear cropped and paint my nails and i say i find another guy hot’ cuz i like his song but i don’t like supporting straight men doing queerbating [sic].'”

Omar’s response was simply: “No i b sucking dick fr”. He later added: “From the back, 100%”.

The term ‘queerbaiting’ refers to people who are accused of using queer aesthetics or hinting at a queer identity without actually committing to or being a part of the LGBTQ community. Both Harry Styles and Heartstopper‘s Kit Connor are examples of people accused of ‘queerbaiting’. Of course, the latter actually came out publicly as bisexual at the beginning of November after accusations and people demanding he address his sexuality.

Speaking to NPR earlier this year Omar added regarding his sexuality: “I feel like in the beginning, I was trying to be mysterious and stuff, but now I’m just like — I’m very gay, so I’m just like, whatever.

“It’s funny, every time I’m doing an interview, they’re like, ‘You don’t like to…’ I’m like: ‘Damn, do I really come off like that?’ But no, I’m totally about it. Maybe I was trying to keep the mystique, you understand? But I don’t even care anymore.”

He also addresses his queerness in songs like ‘Kamikaze’, ‘Bi Fren’, and ‘Apolonio’.

Omar has also told Variety, that: “This generation of queer kids don’t want to label themselves and I think that that’s the coolest thing… There’s no need for labels… Queer is, I feel, a good label, if we’re gonna label it.”

Ivory is available to stream now.
