Andrew Hayden-Smith: ‘You could literally laugh me into bed’
With his very respectable number 56 placing in Attitude’s annual Hot 100, we invited actor and presenter Andrew Hayden-Smith to pose alongside some of the other out gay stars of the Hot 100 – Charlie King, Duncan James and Sanjay Sood-Smith among them – for a stunning cover shoot. In the accompanying interview, Andrew talks about teenage insecurities, why cartoon hero He-Man was his ideal man and dangerous diets…
What is ‘sexy’?
Someone who is comfortable in their own skin and who is charming with it. You can be the best looking person in the world but if your personality sucks then those good looks are useless. Look at Chris Pratt. He’s got bags of personality and people find him attractive before and after he lost weight. It’s not all about looks.
Sexual confidence is…
Being with the right person where you can totally relax and be yourself. Failing that, a bottle of wine usually does the trick.
Sexy men are…
Confident and ambitious. It might sound like a cliché but a good sense of humour is pretty much top of the list too. You could literally laugh me into bed.
What’s your favourite part of a man’s body?
I like a good chest on a man. The bigger the better. When I was a kid, it was all about He-Man. I blame him.
Who was your first crush?
Kenickie from Grease definitely had something to do with my sexual awakening. Maybe it was the tight jeans and leather jacket. I also had Take That plastered all over my walls when I was growing up and yet I still had to tell my parents that I was gay, which I still find hard to get my head around. I can’t believe they didn’t already know!
Have you ever taken a health kick too far?
There was a time about 5 years ago, just after coming out of a long-term relationship when I was working out a lot and perhaps a little too strict with my diet. I think that was more to do with mending a broken heart and doing what I thought would help to get over it. You can’t go on like that forever.
