Olympic diver Tom Daley has documented his preparation and performance at the British National Diving Cup in a new online video, ahead of the Diving World Cup next month.
Held in Southend, the 21-year-old won gold with his new diving partner Dan Goodfellow in the 10m synchro dive, which serves as a qualifying event for the Diving World Cup in Rio held in late February, and is also considered a test run for the 2016 Olympic Games.
“It’s an important competition to get the season going,” he says.
“When we have a competition on the weekend, we usually arrive three to four days before, to acclimatise to the surroundings, because although every board we dive form is 10 metres high, the surface of the board is different, the width of the board is different, the light is different, the colour of the water is different,” he says.
After the event, Daley told the BBC he and Goodfellow would work to “dive better”, despite winning in a bizarre set of circumstances where the pair were the only entrants in their competition category, due a power failure at the venue.
“We’ll try and qualify for the Olympics and then, anything can happen,” said Daley.
Across the pond, Australian Olympic gold medallist Matthew Mitcham yesterday announced his plans to hang up his goggles and retire from diving for good.
